In George Orwell’s novel 1984, the government’s Thought Police, more commonly called Big Brother, maintained an all-seeing eye. Citizens were monitored around the clock to ensure conformity of thought. While totalitarian oversight, whether in government or on a jobsite, is decisively oppressive, a contractor wants to keep a finger on the pulse of the project to ensure optimal project performance and delivery. By adding a fourth dimension, time, to building information modeling, a contractor can essentially look into the future and predict the status of the project at any point during the construction process. This month’s BIM feature by John Jurewicz explains the advantages of 4D visualization and schedule-linked modeling. In his monthly project controls column, Larry True touts the cost control benefits of BIM.
