    if the baseline has been

if the baseline has been approved then no you should not touch it which leads to the question why did you have to change your budgeted hours ? If it was an issued change then all the more reason to leave them in there to show the difference that is the whole point of establishing a baseline which is the original plan which you measure against. If you keep changing the baseline to match the current plan you have defeated the whole purpose of the baseline.

    Hi Leighton

Was this due to your or your boss' mistake? Then correct and create a new BL if the previous one was not yet issued.

Is it an internal or a customer project? Customer project: The BL must be approved and signed by the customer and your management. Internal: Management approval required if previous already published.

As Zoltan wrote: the BL is an important document. All future statusses of schedule will be compared with the BL - earned value, variances, milestones ....

Not that easy to answer without knowing the circumstances.

    Good Planning

    Hi Dieter ,

Yes it was my managers decision because it was way over budgeted , also it is a client project but they never see the baseline all they see is start, finish and % complete.  there is also no costing in this schedule basically the end date is the most important.

    Thankyou for your reply.

    being over budget does not

being over budget does not necessarily have anyhting to do with the end date.

You could have just under estimed the original budget.

Your performance is not what is should be. If this is the case why not ? What factors are causing poor perfomance.

If the client does not see cost or manhours then you can modify the cost and or manhours so that internally you reconcile your project.

If you are using the manhours determine the durations then this is an entirely different topic.

If you are concerned about the end and you are behind schedule on your on accord then you have 3 options

Option #1 Fast Tracking the Schedule

Fast Tracking the schedule means to Revise the logic and do thing concurrently or in parallel which means that your manpower peak will be higher but it will be the same number of man-hours except for additional supervision.

A good rule of thumb is that sequential activities can sometimes be fast-tracked by up to 33%. In other words, if you're fast-tracking, you can start the second of two sequential activities when the first activity is 66% complete. So when you are 66% complete with the first conduit activity you can start the wire pulling.

    Option #2 Crashing the Schedule

Crashing the schedule means to reduce your durations but you will have to increase your man-hours because you need more men to do it in a shorter amount of time. You would shorten the duration of the activities on the critical path by throwing additional resources to the critical path without necessarily getting the highest level of efficiency. You might have to do several iterations because you crash one critical path then something else becomes critical. You will have increased cost in with this option

Option #3 is using a combination of Tracking and Crashing.

    Hi Leighton

Hopefully you copied the old plan - just for you.

If a manager reduces planned hours due to budget, ....

I've seen quite some planning engineers who were fired later after it was evident that the budgeted hours were too low. Can you take responsibility for the lower values?

    Good luck!
