    EPC

Can you be more specific in your query ,

As of me The Breakdown of the Engineering , Procurement & Construction depends upon the Scope & Nature of Construction ,

    Hi Ashish,
I am refering to refinery EPC. What I am really looking for is some explanations and some examples of the stages if that makes some sense.

    hi Ten

For a complete refinry EPC Schedule , u can consider

basically refinery EPC is govened by Procurement of Long lead items and thir subsequent erection and commissioning timimgs

these delivery timing can be verified with purchasing group and subsequent constrcuion timing can be taken from Site .

suggets if u can be more specific so that i can share my exp with u

    Hi guys,
One of the questions I have been asked in the past is -

In Engineering, can you give me the activities involved in building or seting up a refinery ( any sections) and all the way to the critical point in a scehdule?

    The same goes for construction.

Do you kinda understand the question even though it sounds very general?

    Good Morning Ten

My I ask why you need it.

If you need to produce a schedule then go out and spend some money on a good planner.

A schedule does not just drop out first you need to understand the SOW. Normaly Defined in Definition Phase or concept phase.

EPC could also meen contracting strategy. (Type of contract)

    Hi Ten,

I m wrkin in the refinery EPC project as a Project Controlls guy

EPC projects are normally LSTK projects ( where client gives you money and the land rest all you have to generate)

So when you plan the project of EPC nature , for better controlling you have to divide the project into different heads.

Broadly you can divide your project into Engineering , Procurement and Construction

Then You have to again sub divide the Engineering depending up on your nature of project. Normally we divide as Basic Engineering and Detailed Engineering.

Then you can devided the Detailed Engineering and basic engineering based upon the dicipline ( ie Process, Piping Etc).

In procurement you can devide into ordering and manufaturing then into static ,rotary and others,

Construction also you can devide into different heads like piling, foundation, and differnt unit constructions.

After all these classifications you can introduce activities, put relations, and if you use primavera its gonna give you the critical path.

Note :- Always conceptualise your project and imagine wats gonna happen inthe project period.

Always remember to take advise from an experienced person on critical paths as some activities like piping always lands in trouble even though the time required for completion is comparitively less.

Take the Duration from Procurement and Engg respectively.

    Hi Ten
in first step of Engineering phase of project you should set a deliverable list which shows documents/drowings will be issued during the project. This list shuld be approved by project owner and you will get progress based on this list it also known as milestones.Project owner set different status for progressing such as IFD(issued for design)IFC(issued for construction)AFC(approved for construction)and give progress on every documents/dwg according to this model.eg in a building project (engineering phase)you should breakdown the projectto this levels
    1-Units(unt1,unt2,...)2-disciplines(mechanical,structure,electrical,...)3-workpackages 4-deliverabales

    Hi All,

Normally I check this forum with satisfaction of finding new concepts, ideas and ways of planning.
This post is simply depressing. What is ….. EPC? . Please go to Google and try to find out the answer by yourself.

We need to keep this forum at the level that we all professionals with x years of experience deserve. Means HIGH level.

    Tony,

Thanks for giving me an idea that I will post on “improving planningplanet” and I would like to share with you :

    New sections according to wisdom
    Juniors
    Intermediate
Senior. May be here we can have two sub-sections: senior with common sense or without.

    No section for ignorant people.

    New sections according to language;
English: no arguments against this language at the mandatory one.

What about a second language. Here comes the problem WHICH language?? I can say Spanish BUT It can be decided by vote.

    Cheers,

    Hi Carmen,

I think you could be on to something with your idea to improve Planning Planet. The idea of a section for juniors has been floated before, but nothing seemed to be done about it. It might be easier if we kept it to two sections say basic and advanced; that way it focuses on the level of the problem, question or information rather than the experience of the planner which could be divisive.

As for a second language, why not? You could try sending a private message to PP Admin to see any developments are planned in this area. This could be a real winner for Planning Planet and all of us.

Hi Carmen & Chris - I think it is quite true that many of the questions being asked recently produce a much greater sense of wonder than the answers!! Apart from any other categorisation of the site subjects I think it would also be helpful to spilt up planning & scheduling methodology more distinctly from scheduling software. Even though I posted an answer to this original question I too am amazed and astounded at how someone could get a job as a PC Manager & not know what it means! Mind you, perhaps we are just following the same trend that allows politicians to get their jobs - after all, experience, wisdom and expertise don’t count in politics!!

    cheers, Omar

EPC? Wiki has a definition; "Earnings Per Click", given the computing world we live in many may be forgiven for thinking this was the meaning... Hmm, maybe I should renegotiate my rate.... lol

I really appreciate all the response from everyone that took their time to educate me on my question.

Its very sad that some folks on this forum feel they have reached a point so exclusive to only themselves and God knows who else that they cannot even take the time to talk to the little guys.

Or maybe its just because you dont have an answer to the question so you chose to redicule me by telling me I dont belong to this Forum. I dont think thats up to you guys and I would really hate to be on your team. :-(

Good luck in your various fields.

If there was any offence taken by my response I sincerely apologise.

I was merely trying to add some humour as all too often we forget to take time out to have a laugh... My response was a general one and was not directed at any individual.

    Ten,

    I agree completely.

No prizes for guessing where the muppets that poured scorn on your question would rate themselves in their proposed ranking system.

I think they may have self importance issues that need to be addressed.

    Hi Ten,
This is open forum.. spanish or english. junior or senior is just another way to create a division. Questions of any kind should be encouraged.
Back to your question.. I say EPC project is nothing but a project for a planner but basically divided into Engineering procurement and construction as all three are handled by different specialised teams. The breakup of EPC can be multiple, if you consider location of these teams, responsibility, packages, teamwork (as in a consortium or JV) etc. Scope of work and deliverables are there for all the stakeholders and have to be planned for in order to have your program.
This sounds very basic but this is what it is compared to other contracts where the planner has to account for only his organisations responsibility (as in Developer, Engineer or contractor).
