I thought I understood Total Floats

Ok,

I’ve got a task called LTC. Its successor is Dirt Excavation with a FS relationship, 0 lag.

Now, the TF of both activities are showing as 48.

I’ve tied the completion of LTC with a Finish Milestone, and then I’ve tied that milestone into Dirt Excavation with a FS, so that it’s got a successor.

The finish milestone somehow shows a TF of 33. Shouldn’t it be 48 since it is sandwiched between the 2 TF=48 activities?

What’s wrong here?

    Hi Brian,

    It’s not always linear!!
Check the pred. of both activities (LTC. & Dirt Excavation) and you’ll get for sure one with 33 days of total float...

    Hi Brian
TF of an activity depends on the assigned calendar.
    - Your activities have a calendar with 7 working days a week
    - The Milestone has a calendar with 5 working days a week + a public holiday between MS and the project’s end. E.g.:
LTC Start Sep. 12 with OD=9d--> End Sep 20
Dirt Start Sep. 21 with OD=7d--> End Sep 27
Project’s end: Nov 14 with a public holiday (Oct 3, German national day) --> TF = 48days for LTC&Dirt and 33days for the MS.
    OK?
    Regards
    Dieter
