One clarification.
In P3 you used like planning unit the hours, and when set up the calendar defined different working time for friday? Or in different way?

no still days mon-thur = £x, and friday = £y.

try to define the planning unit hours, and a calandar with different working hours.
You should not any more have the problem.

if it were only that simple, you see it’s a 46hr week.
mon-thur is 8hr standard pay and 2hr overtime
fri is 6hr standard
as the overtime rate is different to the standard rate a simple hr calander won’t do unless i can assign a different rate for any work that takes place after 4pm. if that was possible though it should be possible to assign a different rate to a friday i would have thought.
any ideas?

Consider the resource calendar, may help

I did try allocating (example):
Scaffoldmt - for Monday to Thursday cost, allocating the calendar for those days. And
Scaffoldf - for Fridays cost working only Fridays.
When I let the computer do the sums they were wrong (they charged for 5 days in each resource, they weren’t driving and the calendars were correct) and if it had of worked any graphs, which I let p3 work out, would have been wrong. As Scaffoldmt and Scaffoldf are both the same resource, scaffolders.

Any more ideas? There must be a way of getting p3 to figure out accurate costs. mustn’t there?

if you want the activity duration increase as you changes it’s budget and remaining, one thing I am not sure that you have ticked the driving when creating and assigning the resource

nothing to do with durations at all. there not even mentioned. let me clarify.
we charge £x for work monday to thursday.
we charge £y for work on a friday.
durations are set (not driving).
i want p3 to work out the cost for me.
i need to know, if anyone knows, how to use a different rate for a friday.
do you see what i mean?

I’ll take that as a no. there is no way of getting p3 to work out a different rate for a friday. p3 is rubbish at rates.

Not sure if this will help, but here goes.

Define 3 resources, thus

RES1 works Mon - Thur for 8 hours (08:00 - 15:59) x rate a
RES2 works Mon - Thur for 2 hours (16:00 - 17:59) x rate b
RES3 works Friday for 6 hours (08:00 - 13:59) x rate c

All defined as driving.

Remember to check that activity type is "Independent".

Therefore, an activity taking 2 weeks would be allocated resources as follows:-

RES1 64 Hours
RES2 16 Hours
RES3 12 Hours

making 92 hours (or 2 x 46 hour weeks)

and the resource profile would be

i have looked a bit detail at what you have said. an example solved too...what i did was i defined two resources i.e. scaf1 and scaf2 with different rates i.e. your over time rate over the week for two hours and your standard rate over the week for the 46 hours. also, the calendars for these two resources were defined i.e. scaf1 had a calendar that had working hours other than the two hours M-T, that you cahrge at over time rate and the other calendar had standard 46-hours week defined to it. these two calendars were assigned to the repsective resources. now when you run the cost report, it gives you all what you need, seperately as well as together.
i hope this is what you were looking for.

When i try that the programme charges hours for scaf2 for the Friday even though friday is non working.
did you do the maths on a calculator and check it’s definately correct?
or have i gone wrong?

Did you pick up on the "Independant" activity type ?

made no difference
say it was 1 week (46hrs)
It still gives me 46 hrs for scaf1 and scaf2

Very strange, works out exactly as expected for me.

the problem is the units per hour dont change to meet the demand so the sum is only right for a full week, if the activity goes from wednesday to thursday it works out to much overtime or if its one day (friday)it still works out the overtime.

sorry but i was extremely busy over the past few weeks so could not come back to see the response.
Right, let me tell you what i did again,
i defined a new calendar for scaff 2 that was only two hours a day and four days a week. keep the activity type to task and rest of the process is same as i explained before. now in the resouce view, although the table will show you 2-hours on friday for the scaff2 but in the total, these two hours will not be there.

Hmmm... when you check your resource figures in P3, are you using days or weeks ? I think P3 spreads resource values over weeks sometimes - it’s also worth checking your schedules planning unit (ie days/hours etc) matches your resources planning unit.
