Copying Dates into Start and End Fields

I tried as follows, and it woks so so:
a) enter the desired dates in the custom field,
b) select all the cells in the column by dragging the mouse; do not rigt click on the column header to click Copy, does not work,
c) select the same number of rows in the Start column, and click Paste.
It works, except for milestones, multi-task bars.
