P5 - saving changes taking forever

Hi Guys,
when ever I make a change to my database, it goes into saving changes and if I make a signifant change (such as fill column for a couple of hundred activities) this saving takes 10-15 minutes during which time I can’t do anything to the network.
Please help as my boss is thinking I am unproductive (which I may be but not for this reason) :-)

Is it a server or a stand-alone installation?
Which other programmes running the same time?
How is the workload upon the database server?
When was the last back-up and restore of your database?
Why you still work with P5? P6 I found significantly faster especially in mass changes or assignments.
This might have several reasons.
First try for me would be: Backup and restore of the database and to check the workload of the database server.
