User defined field in custom report?

I have created a cash report to show labor cost, material cost, and total revenue. One of the UDF's is for "cost" which is labor+material will not allow me to choose "interval" as the timescale type in the report modification. It is grayed out and defaults to "period total". Why is the pull down not working?
