Hi

I need a system to allow me to schedule a large number of IT realted projects. These vary in scale from relatively large to very small, in the case of the latter some could total two to three days work. I have a team of around 25 people working on these projects

I’m not a full time planner but I have used p3e \ P6 for some time and I’m the administrator of it within our company.

My prioroties are.
collaborative with other users being able to see if not edit data and reports
scheduling with Gannt chart, with easy creation of realtionships and constraints.
simple project creation for small projects.
resource planning to a team and or individual level.
capacity planning and quicly reviewing the impact of new projects.
task assignments to team members.

I’m not currently interested in cost information from the system.

I’ve looked at the web interace in p6, and for my realively simple needs it can do everything I want, i also have spare licieces I can adopt winin the company so there is a limited cost implication.

I’m wondering if p6 is perhaps a sledgehammer to crack a nut, I have looked at other systems including a lot of web based proect collaboration tools but they don’t fit my requirements.

any advice appreciated

Rgds

Rob

I can’t speak for P6 specifically but P3.1 (the old version) would be, I think, too esoteric for your needs. P6 is a complete rewrite though, so it’s very possible that they have much more accessible interfaces for lay-people to use without the need for extensive training.

For managing the works of a team of 25 (25 actually executing the work, or are they managing subcontractors etc?), I would think MSP would give you enough of what you need. It has the dual advantage that it is largely intuitive and often bundled with an organisation’s MS Office install.

tbh, though, if I have something very simple to schedule, I use Excel, it’s fast and simple and everyone understands it. Of course you need to maintain all logic yourself...

If your needs include resource planning and optimization look at Spider Project http://www.spiderproject.ru/demo_e.php.
If not then MS Project is good enough.
