Construction Project Control

Hi Planners,

I have been working as a Planning Engineer for an Engineering Company, involved in the Design of Industrial and Infrastructure Projects.

In our Project Control, I have only Man-hours as Budget. We divide the total project man-hours/ per discipline and then per drawings and track the Progress, variance against the Man-hours consumed.

My question is, how the project is controlled when it comes to a Construction Project. Lets say I have 4 items in my Bill of Quantities. Say

1 Excavation to receive footings....201 Cu.m.
2 R/Concrete for the footings...65 Cu.m.
3 R/Concrete for the Columns... 38 Cu.m.
4 R/Concrete for the Slab ...24 Cu.m.

As I understand, for a Level 4 Schedule the items in the Bill of Quantity will act as the Tasks. And when it comes to resources, what shall be the resources? Say for Item No. 2 (Reinforced Concrete for the footings), whether it will be the quanity of Reinforced Concrete, or Manpower to accomplish the task or Equipment or all the three. Okay, if it’s Concrete, we can input the quantity and its unit price. But when it comes to Manpower and Equipment, how can we quantify the manpower required for each tasks. Is there any reference for different items? And how it will be updated?

As I am working with the Design Consultant, I did not come across the Construction Project Control. But I am very much eager to know how the projects will be Controlled in Construction. Hope someone will help me on this. Thanks in advance

    Hi Imam,

For any given activity completion resources are material / Manpower & Equipments & they can be tracked on either all the three or on one.

There are standard reference manuals on labour out puts per hour/day in market, or some company’s develop of their own based on the project experience.

Ultimatly updation is based on consumption of the resources for any activity what ever is the resource.
So rest of things are same.

Hope this could get you some help!!

    Anand

    Thanks Anand.

Further can you please advise a few Standard Reference Manuals on Labor out-puts, so that I can quickly refer and estimate the duration of my activities.

    Appreciate your help.

    Imam,

Actually your countries counterparts could give better guide.

But any civil engineering Handbook, Q.S. book will contian the labour productivity.

Or the GR released by the Public works department for the current year does have this information.

Otherwise as a thumb rule in most of the activity a skilled person should do a job of 100 - 125 Sq.fts.per day
