MSP Import to P5

Quick Question to everyone, Why can’t I import an MPP File straight into P5? Is this because I’m not using a stand alone version of P5 and that P5 runs of a server??

I’m sure when i have used P5 previously it gave you more options when importing files than just XER,MPX,P3 & XLS files.

I know that you can convert MPP file’s to a MPX file using MSP98 and there is also a MppToMpx application that does the conversion, then you can do your import into P5 but my problem is I’m currently not using MSP therefore i can’t do any of the conversions.

can anyone help with this problem and offer some advise on how to import a MPP file??

MSP must be installed on the pc from where you start the import. Primavera uses OLE-technique (Object Linking and Embedding) which means it uses MSP functions for import and export of MPP-files. It’s independent from server or standalone.

    Good luck!

    Greame,

As soon as you succeed in importing from MSP due to Dieter’s advice, take care, if you want to use EVM, of troubles we encounter with MSP Imports.
    See for instance :

    Good luck.

    Hi
There are some more items to be observed because many start using MSP without any training or consideration. Having imported many MPP-files I found 80 to 90% with user errors, mainly:
    - Calendars misused and not maintained ("P6 calculates wrong dates!" "If you would have included Christmas or other exceptions you would find the same dates.")
    - Planned with fixed durations but the default "effort driven" still used inclusive resource calendars.
Many more are quite common. So first I open a project in MSP to check before import.
    Regards
