Introduction
M5.1 — Performance Measurement Frameworks establishes how project data is converted into a coherent view of delivery performance. It explains how to select proportionate measures across scope, schedule, cost, progress, risk, resources and quality; define calculation rules, tolerances and ownership; and ensure that indicators are aligned to the project’s objectives, baseline and management decisions rather than simply reporting what is easiest to measure.
M5.2 — Earned Value Management integrates authorised scope, time-phased budget, physical progress and actual cost to assess performance consistently. It introduces Planned Value, Earned Value and Actual Cost; explains schedule and cost variances and performance indices; and enables the learner to interpret what the results mean, test whether the underlying baseline and progress data are credible, and avoid treating calculated indicators as a substitute for professional judgement.
M5.3 — Variance, Trend & Root-Cause Analysis moves beyond reporting whether performance is favourable or adverse to explaining why it has occurred and whether it is likely to continue. It develops the learner’s ability to distinguish timing effects from genuine delivery problems, identify recurring patterns and emerging deterioration, trace reported variance to its underlying drivers, and focus management attention on the causes that require action.
M5.4 — Performance Forecasting & Corrective Action uses current performance, remaining scope, productivity, risk and delivery evidence to form a credible view of likely future outcomes. It explains how to develop and challenge estimates at completion, milestone forecasts and recovery scenarios; assess whether proposed interventions are realistic; and translate analysis into owned, time-bound actions that address causes rather than merely improving the reported position.
M5.5 — Management Information, Reporting & Insight brings performance evidence together into clear, proportionate and decision-focused communication. It teaches the learner how to tailor information to different governance levels, maintain traceability from headline indicators to source data, distinguish fact from judgement and forecast, highlight material changes and uncertainty, and present the decisions, interventions and accountabilities needed to improve delivery outcomes.
