Introduction
M4.1 — Risk Management Framework & Process establishes a structured approach for managing uncertainty throughout the project lifecycle. It explains how to define the project’s risk context, governance, responsibilities, appetite, thresholds, categories, escalation routes and review cycle so that risk management becomes an active part of planning and decision-making rather than a periodically updated register.
M4.2 — Qualitative Risk Analysis provides a proportionate method for assessing and prioritising identified risks and opportunities. It develops the learner’s ability to describe uncertainty clearly, evaluate probability and impact using agreed criteria, consider proximity and other relevant factors, recognise bias and interdependency, and focus management attention on the uncertainties that matter most.
M4.3 — Quantitative Risk Analysis converts uncertainty into a numerical assessment of its potential effect on project cost, schedule and key outcomes. It introduces the use of ranges, probability distributions, correlation, simulation and sensitivity analysis to test confidence in forecasts, identify the principal drivers of exposure and support evidence-based decisions on contingency and delivery commitments.
M4.4 — Risk Response Planning & Management turns risk analysis into owned and time-bound action. It explains how to select appropriate threat and opportunity responses, define preventive and contingent actions, allocate accountable owners, assess the cost and effectiveness of proposed responses, identify secondary and residual risks, and integrate agreed actions into the schedule, budget and wider delivery plan.
M4.5 — Contingency, Confidence & Risk-Informed Decision-Making brings risk information together to support realistic commitments and management choices. It teaches the learner how to interpret confidence levels, distinguish contingency from management reserve, avoid double counting, monitor drawdown and emerging exposure, and communicate uncertainty in a way that enables leaders to make informed decisions rather than relying on single-point forecasts or unsupported optimism.
